2018 was a record year for Diamond Brite Metals as we expanded into the architectural segment and took on a more prominent role with service centers across the United States. The demand for metals polishing increased with the unveiling of Section 232 and the boom in construction across metropolitans. Original Equipment Manufacturers (“OEM”), fattened with tax savings from Washington, allotted more money for projects and capital expenditures. Diamond Brite Metals quickly realized that it could not go to market across the board in a uniform fashion. Instead, management decided to segment the business into distinct business units focusing on: architectural polishing and commercial polishing. This strategic decision required the hiring of additional personnel. To help drive revenue through fabricators, management poached an accountant from a prominent New Jersey accounting firm. Meet Darragh Harten, Diamond Brite Metals’ new Business Development Associate. For this blog post, management conducted a brief Q&A with Darragh to discuss his transition into this new role.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. So you are undergoing quite a transition (from accounting to the metals sector), what are your initial thoughts?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. It has been quite a transition actually! From focusing on linear thought processes and crunching excel spreadsheets to learning about metallurgy and the metals supply chain, the transition has been seismic. Add in learning the basic tenets of sales and sales strategies, (including how to sell metals polishing) there’s a lot on my plate. But, the process has been rewarding so far, to deal with an industry that produces fungible goods instead of what at times seemed so cerebral or an academic exercise, is rewarding.

Q. Any initial insights into the metals market that you would care to share?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. I am amazed at how many industries metals polishing, let alone the metals market, touches. I now seem to notice with frequency polished beams, bollards, angles, etc. Regarding the market itself, I see how intertwined the entire supply chain is due to consolidation and vertical integration.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. What are your goals for 2019?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. My personal goal is to absorb every shred of information or knowledge about metals polishing. I hope to help Diamond Brite Metals acquire new customers across all segments to increase their architectural polishing and commercial polishing sales. Additionally, I would like to help transform how we can go to market including increasing our web presence, SEO, and digital marketing efforts. When added to our sales model, I am confident that Diamond Brite Metals can grow its architectural and commercial polishing sales.
